Cathedral Prep Scouting Report
Reynolds & Prep face off in a special match at the University of Pittsburgh on Friday, January 13. at 5:00. A Pitt-Buffalo match follows at 7:00. The matches will be held in the Fitzgerald Field House. There is no Junior High match.

Overview
Erie Cathedral Prep (8-3) and Reynolds (7-0) travel to the University of Pittsburgh to compete in the preliminary match before the Pitt-Buffalo match. But for both teams, this is not just a warmup/undercard match as these two are perenially two of the best teams in District 10; Prep being the consistant AAA leader and Reynolds the many time AA kingpin.
The Ramblers are coached by Mike Hahesy who is the schools winningest coach ever with a 187-50 record. His teams have won seven D10 and three NW Region titles while placing in the top four in the state five times. He and Coach Casey Taylor are considered among the top coaches in D10 so the teams and the programs are very similar in many ways.
In the previous 30 meetings, starting in 1977, Reynolds has won 19 times against Prep's 10 wins. They are one of the very few schools to have double digit victories against the Raiders. The one remaining contest, in 1979, was one of the two ties in our long history. Before last year's Prep win, Reynolds had won 10 straight meetings, the longest streak for either team in the matchup.
Once again, there will be plenty of good matchups in the match that all the fans should want to see.
Prep Team Records
Prep has earned an 8-3 record by the power of a well balanced team. All of their losses were close matches to top shelf quality teams. Both Prep and Reynolds beat their one common foe, Erie McDowell, with nearly identical scores (Reynolds: 42-23 and Prep 43-24).

Ranked Wrestlers & Key Matchups
Prep has almost their entire team earning AAA NW Region rankings - a great example of their overall team strength. The Raiders aren't far behind in then number of ranked team members so there will be lots of great matches to watch.
If there isn't much shifting of weight classes, the 133 pound matchup of Sam Staab and Chase Bell may be the match of the night. Depending where he wrestles, Clay Mallory vs Vito Gentile or jalen Wagner will be one to watch, too. Clay pinned Vito twice last year!
Note: Cathedral Prep raknkings are for AAA and Reynolds is AA.

Prep Roster
Note: The records do not include the Wednesday match with Erie. The Ramblers got a shutout so just add one to the W column for the starters.
You can see that the Sophomore class comprises the bulk of the team's roster, a testament of them having one of the best Junior High teams in PA last year. Also, Most all starters have very good records.
Most of the wrestlers from 121 and up have competed at two or three weight classes so we won't know the match ups until the coaches put their guys on the mat.
I always try to infer tendancies on what I see in stats. What grabbed my attention for this match is Prep seems to be a very good pinning team. However they have lost many more regular decisions than they won. I am not sure exactly what that means but it is an abnormal ratio in what I observed over time for good teams.

Special Notes:
They have lots of good records against good competition! Sophomore centric team - many were on that super Junior High team last year.
Prep is a pinning team with 9 wrestlers having 5 or more pins including Sam Staab with 13 and Owen Shetler with 10 pins. Reynolds needs to stay off their backs and keep Prep's bonus points to a minimum.
But they have 4 guys that have been pinned 5 or more times, too: Carter - 7 times , Al-Hchaimi - 5, Domkowski - 6 and Spaulding - 5. The latter two have also pinned 5 opponents each so they may be pin/get pinned type of wrestlers. Reynolds may need to exploit those holes if those people are in the lineup..
4 of Aiden Carter's (107) 9 wins are forfeits
4 of Max Spaulding's (215) 10 wins are forfeits (as stated above, he does have 5 pins). And he was the sole Rambler winner in the Pin City Tournament.
Isaiah Harrick (189) has 14 career pins but was pinned 18 times.
Owen Shetler (172) has a career record 40-40 with 23 pins. Jalen pinned him last year
Clay Mallory's (165/172) career record is 36-13 and 21 pins. He pinned Vito twice last year. He has as been at 165 in Ohio events, will he drop to 160? I don't have info if he is certified to drop.
Sam Staab (133) is a 2 time District champ with a career 50-15 record with 30 pins. He pinned both Kevyn Malgieri & Louie DeJulia last year. He and Chase Bell might be the big matchup of the night!
Keagan Oler (121-127) is 33-17 with 14 pins an 9 tech falls in his short career. Keagan pinned Dillon Anderson last year. His match might be a key one for both teams whether he wrestles our Louie Gill, Waylen Waite or Greyden Gustus.
