2024 D10 Championships

With a dream of going deep into the post season, Reynolds hopes to continue their winning ways and return the entire group to Sharon next week for the Regionals. The top 8 wrestlers in each weight class get a ticket to stay on the tournament train.

There is a lot of returning and new talent in D10 this year and the quality of competition should be fun for fans to watch. There are a couple of bracketing quirks you may want to look at.

First, returning District champ and ranked 6th in the state and 1st in the region, Story Buchanon, defaulted his Section 1 semifinal and consolation matches to end up 6th in sections. This made that bracket-section of the District 160 pound weight class extremely tough. He meets Rudy Gentile of Greenville on Friday afternoon and the same night, that winner meets another returning D10 champ, JoJo Przybycien of Ft. Lebeouf (2nd in region, 7th in state), in the quarterfinals. Wow!

Second, a new rule this year (this is just a summary) is that if you win a place-winning match (e.g. 7th, 5th, 3rd, 1st) due to a forfeit without a doctor's verification for the loser, the winner can elect to take the spot in the brackets of the defaulting wrestler in the next tournament. The intent is to stop the practice of purposely losing to get better matchups at the next level. Of course, there are times when a person does not forfeit for that reason but the consequences are the same.

In short, our own Greyden Gustas was a winner by forfeit to take the 5th place Section medal. Greyden is allowed, and did, swap District bracket positions with the 6th place wrestler in sections. Hopefully, this works to his benefit.

Again, there will be lots of great wrestling by many boys that will be wearing regional and state medals in the following weeks. Be sure to get to Sharon or watch it online!
