Reynolds vs Greenville, version 62.0

Physicists can explain the concept of entropy as a measure of disorder in a system ... or in laymen's terms, measure the changes. But I bet those scientists can't explain why the rival between Reynolds & Greenville hasn't changed and is still as big as it was in the 60's!

And it's Senior Day for the Raiders.

Where, When & How to watch

The match is at Reynolds and starts at 6:00 on Wednesday for the Jr High and any JV matches. Afterwards, the Senior Night presentation and the drawing for the Booster Club Beef & Booze raffle will take place and be followed by the varsity match.

Please keep watch on the Reynolds Wrestling News Facebook page for any updates to the times for the evening's activities.

As posted on Facebook. tickets will be sold at Reynolds High School from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm Monday to Wednesday -- until the event is sold out (I would be surprised if they last all day Monday)

You can watch the match on the Reynolds Wrestling News Facebook page when Ryan Hills, Gaye McLaughlin and Kevin Brandt of the Reynolds Wrestling Legacy Club live-streams the event.

Also, consider going to the Reynolds VFW to watch the match as they will cast the stream to their TVs for patrons. If you are not a member, someone will sign you in as a guest.

The Rival

So many things tie the communities together. Geographically, The Reynolds school district wraps around three fourths of Greenville. Many of our good friends lived in both communities at different times of their lives.

And we both have a rich tradition in wrestling success. Many of the original Raider star wrestlers in the early 60's even came from Greenville when West Salem Twp became part of the school district. In fact, every coach in Raider history is a Reynolds or Greenville graduate!

Over the years, other county schools would have peaks and valleys of success but year in and year out, it was always Reynolds and Greenville in the mix as the best teams around.

Like most kids from West Salem back then, most of my childhood social activities were based in Greenville: cub/boy scouts, Little League & Babe Ruth baseball (Greenville star, Doug Weaver was my teammate) and taking advantage of the different offerings like swimming at the town pool and other activities at the Rec Center in Riverside Park. I knew the Greenville crowd long before I met my future RHS teammates when I got to the high school in 7th grade.

So the rivalry is organic. An inevitable force of nature. And here we are for the 62nd meeting between these two great rivals. Greenville comes to town with an impressive 18-1 record to take on undefeated, 14-0, Reynolds.

The Raiders are coming off an eye-opening weekend (to the state pundits) at the Brookville Ultimate Duals where they topped the 4th, 8th, 13th and 20th ranked teams in the state, their best performance at that event in four years.

Greenville has won quite handily most of the season.  The only blemish on their record was an early December loss to 10th ranked Bald Eagle Area.  Since then, they were tested just once, this past Friday, in a 30-24 win over local rival Commodore Perry.

Greenville Roster

The Trojans have the age-based bookends covered with a normal lineup of 5 freshman and 5 seniors in their starting lineup. The youngsters have been exceptionally successful with Hunter Cox leading the team in wins. All five freshmen are in the top 12 of the NW Region rankings (see the Greenville Review section) with Cox also getting state level attention.

And once again, we will likely see another Gentile family battle at 160 pounds where Greenville's Rudy may take on his cousin Raider, Vito. This will be the first time they have faced each other - at least in public and not at family gatherings.

To go with Rudy, most of the other Greenville bigs have been very successful, too. Bennett Hayne (172), Teague Calvin (215) and Joey Peterson (285) are ranked high in the region with Gentile, Calvin and Peterson cracking the state rankings.

On the career win tally, we have:

Teague Calvin 72 wins, section cahmp

Bennett Hayne 63

Madilyn Enterline 56 wins & girls state champ

Joey Peterson 52 wins

Rudy Gentile 51 wins

Cradles & Bundles & Bars, Oh My!:

As a team, Greenville has a very interesting makeup of result ratios for wins, majors, tech falls and pins. The Trojans have recorded an excellent 116 pins vs just 44 against. They maintain a slight 47-42 advantage in regular decisions. What stands out to me is their other bonus point wins with an impressive 12-3 nod in major decisions.

But the oddest stat is they have not recorded a single tech fall and have had just 3 earned against them.

I have not watched them wrestle this year but this screams out that they go for pins and do not attempt as many tilts. Knowing the history of the area schools, I am guessing (and it's just a guess) that Greenville uses a lot of cradles - either far cradles or cross-face cradles as part of a bundle run. In addition to running the bundle series, they might use some chicken wings or another bar series. But my money is on bundles when not looking for cradles.

Here are their bonus point leaders.

Pins Wrestler + notes

14 Josh Perrino

11 Teague Calvin

11 Hunter Cox + 3 majors

11 Joey Peterson

11 Bennett Hayne

10 Myles Robertson lost 3 tech

8 Rudy Gentile + 3 majors

8 Madilyn Enterline

7 Tyler Enterline

Also, Mason Goodspeed has pinned everyone he has beaten.

Conversly, they have a few people that have given up bonus points that the Raiders may be able to exploit.

Justin Perrino, Gavin Grant, Hunter Grant and Shane Barnes appear to be the types to either pin their opponent or get pinned. Myles Robertson is the only Trojan to lose by a tech fall and it has happened 3 times.

Reynolds Review

The Raiders are coming off an exceptional performance at the Brookville Ultimate duals where they ran the board with 5 wins including victories over the 4th, 8th, 13th and 20th ranked teams in the state. Once again, they showed high levels of intensity on the mat. And better yet, different people had to step up to win key individual matches in the different team contests. This weekend showed us, yet again, that wrestling is a team sport at Reynolds!

Of special note, Casey Taylor passed the 250 win mark in his remarkable coaching career.

Reynolds enters this last regular season match with an unblemished 14-0 record and hope to keep building momentum as we enter the tournament season.

Reynolds Roster

The Raiders have a well rounded team with several guys getting key wins in crucial moments. When you have two of your best guys that have been to states start off a tough match by losing (as happened in the United match), you better have a solid team to bounce back to win that match. And to the credit of those two wrestlers, they didn't sulk, but bounced back and won key matches in subsequent bouts.

Several are showing they have the potential to make deep runs in the post season tournaments.

Veterans Louie Gill, Angelo Lomonte, Waylon Waite, Chase Bell and Vito Gentile continue to add impressive wins to their records. Greydon Gustas and Louie Dejulia have greatly improved this year and are showing they belong with the team leaders. This is a great core of experienced wrestlers that provide positive leadership.

Freshman Logan Stewart has got the attention on the state level and another newcomer, Colton Tupper is constantly beating quality opponents and raising his rep across the region. Casey Resek and Kolton Wilkinson quietly get better every time they wrestle with Casey showing the potential to be a big winner. Emery Johnson missed all of December with an injury and his record does not reflect what he will be in the next few weeks.
